The speech I gave this year at Taylor University, a predominantly white evangelical university in the Indianapolis suburb, was perplexing yet rewarding. I understood that white evangelicals voted more than 80 percent for Trump in 2016. I came there with a disdain for all who would dare vote for Trump as president, but I left feeling somewhat like Coretta King, my mentor, who could see the good in everyone.
In honor of Black History month, each day I will be sharing with you profiles of 50 amazing African American role models who I interviewed in 1985 for my book And Still We Rise. Some, like Maya Angelou, who allowed me to re-frame the title of her poem And Still I Rise for my book, Dick Gregory, Dr. Martin Luther King, Sr. and Arthur Ashe have made their heavenly transitions.
This new bombshell is the release of allegations in former national security adviser John Bolton’s book manuscript that President Trump had illegally tied military aid to Ukraine contingent on probes into former Vice President Joe Biden, Trump’s most feared political rival. In Bolton’s not-yet-published book, this account is not hearsay but allegedly firsthand conversations that Bolton had with Trump and key advisers, such as Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Hopefully Duchess of Sussex Meghan Markle and her prince Harry will take comfort in the fact that they are not the first royals to be dogged by global controversy. And in time their ordeal will be overcome. Similar racist incidents often plagued Queen Charlotte of mixed race heritage who reigned as Queen of England from 1761 and 1818.
“Messiah” an original Netflix series is so mesmerizing I can’t stop watching it. A Christ-type figure begins showing up in the Middle East and also in the Bible Belt in the USA. Crowds follow him, he walks on water, and heals the sick. His actions which actually hurt no one and inspires many enrages the media, the CIA and FBI gets involved and millions quit work to follow him. Makes you wonder what would we do if someone like that showed up in our lives amid strange occurrences and people thought he was the Messiah? Would this be blasphemous, acceptable? Would you lock him up, embrace him, or scream FALSE PROPHET?
The most simple explanation is that we have a hater-in-chief as your president. Hateful, derogatory language about black and brown people coupled with his inability to denounce the hateful alt-right violence in Charlottesville Va which extolled anti-Semitism has emboldened hate groups. America is reaping what is being sown from the top and we must do all we can to reach up while haters are trying to pull us down.
